Most recently, we saw how the spread of COVID worldwide depended greatly on the safety measures each community and country took. Ultimately, the physical health of an individual and then the physical health of the larger group are interconnected.

One example demonstrating the power of health programs developed for communities is in schools. 

Healthy eating strategies are implemented in schools worldwide, with the end goal being positive physical health for the children in the program. Goof Bujis, Manager for Schools for Health in Europe Network Foundation (SHE), shares his experience in developing healthy eating strategies in schools. 

He shares, “A community approach is more effective than giving people information about healthy eating.” Instead of telling families what they should be feeding their kids for optimal health, schools developed exercise routines, meal plans, and exercise programs with the collective goal being better health. By merging physical activity with healthy eating through holistically inclined programs, they saw positive results in kids’ health.

We learn to live healthy lives by observing the people around us. That’s why it’s so important to surround ourselves with healthy people who live healthy lives. We are wired to be connected to other people and co-regulate, and thus promote healthy habits in one another.
