How Often Should You Do A Gut Cleanse?

An image of healthy fruits and vegetables is laid out on a table in a circle, displaying items for a gut cleanse.

Making subtle changes to your health can profoundly impact your energy levels, mood, and so much more. A gut cleanse, for example, is one incredibly impactful health change. Your gut is always connected to your overall state of health. Therefore, a routine cleanse periodically can have a drastic effect on both your physical and mental well-being.

In fact, a gut cleanse may be exactly what your body needs to feel revitalized and functioning at its best again. And there are many ways you can approach the process. Here’s what you need to know to get started.

How Does A Gut Detox Cleanse the Body?

Gut health is directly tied to the well-being of your body. In fact, many health ailments are more likely to occur when the colon is riddled with bad bacteria. This is where a gut detox or cleanse can come into play.

With an unhealthy lifestyle, the gut loses its balance of good and bad bacteria. When your gut houses a surplus of bad bacteria, microorganisms infiltrate the organs and disrupt the balance of hormones, toxins, and other crucial health regulators. This usually results in brain fog, fatigue, poor digestion, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and other health symptoms.

However, by doing a gut detox, you can cleanse and restore your gut’s natural balance of bacteria healthily and sustainably. It’s as simple as eating a diet rich in whole foods and clean nutrition. Healthy, clean nutrients will remedy any unwanted health symptoms by flushing unhealthy toxins from the body. As a result, the function of your gut will improve, and your healthy lifestyle will begin to flourish.

How Often Should You Do A Gut Cleanse Detox?

So, how often should you do a gut cleanse detox? According to Dr. Zora DeGrandpre of Cleanse Joy, this answer depends on the person asking. In essence, each body has a different version of normal in regard to routine cleansing. Dr. Grandpre suggests that a fiber-rich diet of at least 50 grams daily should result in regular bowel movements. This will also help support the natural cleansing of your gut and unwanted bacteria.

Yet, when it comes to giving your gut health an extra boost, Dr. Grandpre claims that it really depends on how you feel. If you’ve experienced the following, it may be an excellent time to consider a colon cleanse.

  • Regular bloating
  • Difficult bowel movements
  • Constipation
  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue

For some, this could be once a month. For others, a cleanse at least three to four times a year is ideal.

Whether you choose a frequent cleanse or a couple of cleanses throughout the year, remember that too much gut detoxing is not recommended. This can have an adverse effect, resulting in a surplus of good bacteria, sometimes called a “lazy gut.” Ideally, you’ll know your gut is healthy when you’re experiencing the following:

  • Your bowel movements are regular
  • Your energy is boosted
  • Your mood is stable
  • Your overall health feels in balance
