5 Daily Habits That Can Lengthen Your Life

daily habits

Healthy eating is the first thing many people think of when they decide they want to live a healthy lifestyle.  This is, of course, much easier said than done.  Mentally deciding to live healthier and physically putting in the work are two different things entirely.  However, it does not have to be hard.  Starting with a few healthy habits and building from there is a great way to create a healthy lifestyle for yourself.  Here are five daily habits that can make your life healthier, and maybe even longer.

1. Drink more water.

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!  Drinking water is one of the healthiest things you can do.  Water has so many benefits.  It keeps your body hydrated and working properly, flushes out toxins, clears your skin, and more.  The average adult should make it a daily habit to drink eight eight-ounce glasses of water.

2. Get active.

Exercising is incredibly important for a healthy lifestyle.  If you are always sitting at a desk hunched over a laptop, you aren’t using very many muscles.  You will become weaker over time if you don’t use your muscles.  Exercising doesn’t have to be going to a fancy gym with a personal trainer.  It can be as simple as taking a walk around your neighborhood.  Find something you like that gets you moving and make it a daily habit.

3. Sleep.

The average adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep every night.  Getting less than that can take a serious toll on your health.  Being tired all the time makes you more likely to consume sugar and caffeine and less likely to exercise.  Not getting enough sleep can also make you cranky and stressed.  Some people think they are getting enough sleep but don’t feel rested – and it’s often because of electronic devices.  Put your phone down a good hour before getting into bed.  The blue light from screens keeps you awake, so try reading a book or talking to a family member instead.

4. Think about mental health as well as physical.

When people think about living a healthy lifestyle, they often focus on the physical aspects of being healthy.  While these are obviously important, your mental health is just as vital.  When you are mentally unwell, you start to neglect things like eating well and staying active.  This can spiral out of control rather quickly, so keeping a pulse check on your mindset is always a good idea.

5. Eat well.

Healthy eating is one of the hardest parts of living a healthy lifestyle. Because let’s be honest, junk food tastes good.  Whether you have a sweet tooth or just love fast food, almost everyone can list off some snacks they probably shouldn’t be eating.  The trick is to eat food that is good for you and tastes good.  If you are forcing yourself to eat a vegetable that you hate every day, that isn’t going to last very long.  Instead, find some healthy dishes that you genuinely enjoy.  If you aren’t very confident in your cooking abilities, consider ordering a meal plan.  It’s a great way to kick off a healthy lifestyle on the right foot.
